Rochdale Overview

Rochdale has recovered to baseline levels for both active (55.7%) and inactive (33.3%), but neither for pre-pandemic levels.

Unlike Greater Manchester (GM), 16-34 years' inactivity was reducing pre-pandemic, whilst NS SEC 6-8 was increasing. Apart from South Asian ethnic groups and NS SEC 3-5 groups, other demographics were also reducing in inactivity in Rochdale.

Most have recovered to baseline, except 35-54 years, males and NS SEC 3-5 groups.

The inactive population has seen a decrease in the last 12 months (-2.4%), is below baseline (-1.2%) but higher than pre-pandemic levels (+4.4%).

Differences across demographics

Unlike GM, 16-34 years' inactivity was reducing pre-pandemic, whilst NS SEC 6-8 was increasing. Apart from South Asian ethnic groups and NS SEC 3-5 groups, other demographics were also reducing in inactivity in Rochdale.

South Asian ethnic groups, 16-34 years and NS SEC 3-5 groups were most impacted by the pandemic.

Most demographics, apart from males, 35-54 years, 75+, LTHC, NS SEC 1-2 and White British ethnic groups have seen a decrease in inactivity in the last 12 months.

However only NS SEC 6-8 and South Asian ethnic groups have recovered to pre-pandemic levels. With most recovering to baseline, except 35-54 years, males and NS SEC 3-5 groups.

South Asian ethnic groups' inactivity is higher than NS SEC 6-8 groups. 35-54 years inactivity is higher than 55-74 years in Rochdale and males inactivity higher than females, reversing the GM and national trends. Further LTHC and those aged 75+ are higher than GM and showing a gradual increase.
