Help Shape the Future of Trans and Non-Binary Inclusion in Sports and Physical Activity

LGBT Foundation, in partnership with GM Moving, has launched a survey to better understand the experiences of trans and non-binary people in movement and sports.

This is a vital step towards making sure everyone feels welcomed and supported in leading an active lifestyle.

We are asking relevant organisations across Greater Manchester to complete this survey. If you represent a sports club, community facility, or group, please complete the organisation survey here. Your insights are crucial to creating a more inclusive environment for trans and non-binary people in Greater Manchester.

Why This Matters

Physical activity is important for well-being, but many trans, non-binary, and gender-diverse individuals face barriers that stop them from participating fully. This survey aims to gather voices and experiences from individuals and organisations in Greater Manchester. Our goal is to challenge cis-normativity and design spaces that include and support trans and non-binary people in sports and physical activity.

Claire Tomkinson, Strategic Lead at GM Moving, says: "We want to understand what is needed to support trans and non-binary communities in Greater Manchester. By working with people and learning from their experiences, we can build a system that fights inequalities and makes physical activity truly inclusive."

How You Can Help

If you represent a sports club, community facility, or group, please complete the organisation survey. Your insights on creating more inclusive environments for trans and non-binary people are essential. Share your experiences and any challenges you face in promoting inclusive participation.

We also encourage trans and non-binary individuals living in Greater Manchester to share their thoughts. Your voice is important. Complete the survey to help us understand the barriers to participation in physical activities.

The survey will remain open until 25 October.

What’s Next?

By collecting this information, GM Moving and LGBT Foundation can influence decisions, reduce barriers, and improve policies for inclusive sports and physical activity. Together, we can support organisations in creating environments where trans and non-binary people feel confident and empowered to live active lives.

Help us shape a future where everyone in Greater Manchester can enjoy the benefits of physical activity—regardless of their gender identity.

We will soon be launching a similar initiative in partnership with The Proud Trust, focused on positive experiences for children and young people.

About GM Moving

GM Moving is a charity transforming the physical activity landscape in Greater Manchester by encouraging inclusive and accessible participation for all.

Our Commitment to Action

At GM Moving, our shared purpose is to change lives through participation in movement, physical activity, and sport.

Our mission is active lives for all. This means doing everything we can to understand and remove the barriers that communities face.

We can only achieve this by working in partnership with the people who experience those barriers.

Some people and communities face bigger barriers and inequalities to being active.

This is seen in the data from the Sport England Active Lives survey which tells us that 40% of trans and non-binary people in Greater Manchester are inactive, compared to around 28% of the wider population.

For trans, non-binary, and gender-diverse young people, 52% feel their gender identity has affected their ability to take part in sport.

This is due to the inequalities that exist in society.

Research from Pride Sports also tells us that within the trans community:

  • 42.2% avoid gyms
  • 39% avoid clubs or social groups
  • 17% avoid public spaces such as parks

We have partnered with LGBT Foundation and The Proud Trust to explore this and understand what needs to change. Our collective aim is to:

  • Develop key messages and recommendations
  • Improve the skills, knowledge and confidence of the workforce
  • Build lasting relationships with key partners in this space
  • Ensure that trans and non-binary communities are leading the way

More information around our LGBTQ+ Commitment to Action can be found on our website.
